Cape Town is famous for its beautiful beaches, but Boulders Beach in Simonstown offers up something the others do not: a colony of penguins!
Not only is Boulders Beach one of Cape Town’s most visited beaches, but it is also the only place in the world where you can get up close with African Penguins, an endangered species.
Boulders and its surrounding beaches form part of the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area, which guarantees the penguins are protected. Three boardwalks wind their way through the dunes and vegetation to provide both excellent viewing spots for visitors, but also protection for nesting penguins and their chicks.
Pop into the Boulders Visitors Centre for some interesting information about African Penguins, or pay the nominal conservation fee and share the family-friendly swimming beach with Cape Town’s cutest citizens.
Boulders Beach can become quite crowded – get there early if you want to secure a good spot on the beach. If you are on a self-drive visit, please look beneath your parked vehicle to check for penguins before driving off.
